Thousands watch live as Endurance
Record is Broken!...
An ecstatic crowd welcomed Ben Rockett back to Land's End last Friday after 5 days 21 hours and 8 minutes of staggering physical effort which saw the Bath based PhD student cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back again. Thousands more were following Ben's progress via the internet as a red dot on an ever changing map marked the position of the support vehicle which shadowed Ben throughout the challenge. Despite the gruelling nature of the trip, Ben finished the last 12 miles as a sprint supported by team riders Dan Tudge and Tony Solon together with Simon Williams, brother of Olympic Gold medallist Amy Williams, who had joined Ben for the ride down the A30.
Messages of support flooded in from friends, family and complete strangers alike as the story of the ride unfolded. There had been drama from the start as the team physio had been admitted to hospital and was unable to start the journey, the support vehicles had suffered punctures and a blown exhaust and torrential rain sapped the energy and spirit. Despite these setbacks, Ben ploughed on, cycling through the pain and inspiring the multitude that were by now becoming addicted to the progress of the red dot. Ben's aims, apart from breaking the record set by Bobby Brown, were to inspire people to achieve and to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young.
Some of the Internet followers admitted to shedding tears as they followed Ben's progress and read messages of support from other well-wishers. The word “inspiration” crops up throughout the comments so it is safe to say that Ben has achieved his aim to inspire also. His physical achievement is all the more remarkable when you realise that Ben was born with dysplasia of the hip and learned to walk in a frame. Not only that but he was struck by a car in 2007 and the damage to his leg put paid to his hopes of a career in the Royal Marines.
After the ride and a well earned team breakfast in Penzance, Ben went to hospital in his home town of Taunton for precautionary checks. He has had a lot of fluid removed from his knees and is also nursing a possible broken foot but apart from extreme tiredness his vital signs have all been remarkably normal.
The story of the ride and the followers comments are still available on Ben's website athttp://www.rockettrides.com/ where there is a link to Ben's Just Giving site to enable you to make donations to Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Phil Ovens Wins The 2010 Forde Abbey Photographic Competition...

The 2010 Forde Abbey photographic competition awarded a well deserved first prize to Phil Ovens for his atmospheric photograph of Leda and the Swan which is the Mermaid Pond's centrepiece.
The black and white photograph was taken during a heavy downpour, with the vertical rain creating a lovely frisson on the surface of the water. They all felt it was a highly original composition.
Well done Phil!

Derwent - 1 million smART pods...
When you have one of the largest portfolios of products in the world, how can you create a merchandising system that is adaptable to both the needs of the products and retailers and save space?
Building your brand – more than a million “smART pods” produced
When you have one of the largest portfolios of products in the world, how can you create a merchandising system that is adaptable to both the needs of the products and retailers and save space?
Well, we think that, having to date produced over 1,000,000 “smART pod” modules for Derwent , we have found the answer.

Injection moulded modules link together to allow any configuration of product to be displayed. The moulded components were designed with built in channels for branding and promotion which frame product categories allowing easy identification of pencils. The “smART pod” modules can also be moulded in a variety of colours to suit the branding of specific pencil ranges such as artist and graphic.
Space is always at a premium so every millimetre we could save on height could be given over to merchandising more product. However barcode and product information must still be available for the consumer and retailer. To answer this problem we integrated an information ticket strip that drops down from within the system so it does not take up any valuable merchandising space.
The system was developed to be counter standing, wall mounted and free standing providing Derwent with a system that can meet the space limitations of all retail channels.
The client comments: 'With so many different pencil ranges in our portfolio and as all our pencils are available to customers individually it was essential for us to have a merchandising solution that not only housed a large number of pencils but also communicated our brand and range information to customers. The smART pod was ideal for us as it captured all these elements.'
